An overview on NTA UGC NET

NTA conducts the 81-subject National Eligibility Test (NET), commonly known as UGC NET or NTA UGC NET Exam, on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), since 1989-90.

As a statutory body, the University Grants Commission was established in 1956 by the Indian Government with the objective of coordinating, determining, and maintaining higher education standards.

In November 2017, NTA (an Indian government agency) was established to conduct entrance exams for institutes of higher education.

Since December 2018, the NTA NET exam has been administered by the NTA instead of the CBSE. It is typically conducted twice a year (June & December cycles), with more than 5 lakh students taking the exam every time.

The exam determines whether you are eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor (AP) and/or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

Candidates who achieve marks greater/equal to the JRF cut-offs in their NTA NET for their respective subject are awarded a JRF letter. Basically, a JRF letter is a bearer document that allows you to get a scholarship while pursuing your M.Phil./Ph.D.

UGC-NET 2022 Exam Pattern

NTA-UGC-NET Exam is a computer-based test (CBT). Both papers have multiple-choice questions (Objective) without negative marking.

Paper 1 is a general aptitude test, which takes 3 hours to complete. In paper-1, there are 10 units in which students are assessed for their reasoning ability, divergent thinking, and general awareness. Each unit has five questions of two marks each.

The total marks for paper-2 are 200. Paper-II is the subject selected by the student. It is usually the subject in which the student completed his/her master's.

A student must score 40% in Paper-1 and Paper-2 in order to be considered for the subject-based merit list.

There is no break between paper-1 and paper-2. Both are held in one stretch of 3 hours. The morning shift is from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, while the evening shift is from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.\

How to pass the NTA-UGC-NET exam on the first attempt?
